Padnendadlu Postgraduate Bursaries
For Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Australian women undertaking higher degrees by coursework at a South Australian university.
Applicants:
- Must be Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander women,
- Must be enrolled in a Masters or Doctorate by coursework at a South Australian university,
- Must not be employed full-time, or on fully-paid study leave,
- Must not have received an AFUW-SA Scholarship in this category in 2009.
These bursaries may be used for the purchase or hire of equipment, field trip or research expenses, thesis publication costs, fees incurred because of study commitments, conference attendance or short-term assistance with living expenses. Note that if the bursary is to be used for the purchase of equipment, the equipment must be for the personal possession and use of the applicant, not of the University department. The Bursary must be used within twelve months of the date of the award, i.e. by the end of June 2011.
Academic merit is the selection criterion carrying the most weight. This is followed by financial need, and how essential the purpose for which the bursary will be used is to the progress or completion of the degree. These two criteria have roughly equal weight. Finally, in order to separate people on a shortlist for the postgraduate bursaries, we may consider the extent to which people undertake activities and interests outside of their degrees.
> Value
The amount of each Bursary will not exceed the $A4,000, but may be less depending on the requirements of each successful applicant. More than one bursary in each category may be offered if enough funds are available. No one will be awarded more than one bursary in any one year. In exceptional circumstances the trustees of The AFUW-SA Inc. Trust Fund reserve the right not to award a bursary.
Until 2009 funds for these bursaries were raised annually by the Academic Hoods and Gowns Hiring Service run on a voluntary basis by the trustees, members of The AFUW-SA Inc. and friends. Funds are now sourced from investments.
Your application must reach the Trust Fund's secretarial service by 1 March, 2010.
